内野清香の初めての個展、『６つの部屋』は、奇妙な物語の気配に満ちている。意味のある物語なのかと思えば、頼りなくそこから逃げ去っていき、けれども、まったく霧散してしまうのかというと、そういうわけでもなく、またゆっくりと物語らしきものへの凝集が始まる。他人の夢でも見てみたい。そう語る内野の言葉通り、彼女の作品は、知人や友人など他人が見た夢を視覚化するという作業をベースにしている。もちろん視覚化といっても、内野の恣意的な判断を含まないわけにはいかないわけだから、まったくの他人の夢というわけでもない。いやそれどころか、作業の半ばにはすでに、彼や彼女のイメージは内野自身の夢でさえあるようである。夢。さまざまな出来事が渦巻く宇宙の中で、それぞれに懸命に生きている心弱い人間たちが、漆黒の闇の中で繰り返し体験し続けている脈絡のないイメージの奔流。内野の作品の前で、わたしたちはそれが実に頼りないものであるのと同時、かけがえのないものでもあることに気づかされ、そして心を打たれることになる。
This first solo exhibition by Sayaka Uchino, “six rooms,” conveys a strong feeling that one is viewing a peculiar story. Though her works seem to be telling meaningful stories, they all make elusive escapes. Yet when one thinks that the story is about to vanish into thin air, it slowly begins to convey what appears to be a cohesive story. Uchino once mentioned that it would be interesting if she could see other people’s dreams. In actuality, she has created her works based on the visualization of dreams that her friends and acquaintances have seen. But since Uchino is the one visualizing those people’s dreams, the works inevitably contain her arbitrary decisions; thus, the dreams are not entirely those of others. On the contrary, midway through the process of creating her work, “his” or “her” image/dream already begins to seem like that of her own. Dreams are like a torrent of incoherent images that we repeatedly continue to experience in the pitch-darkness of our own minds, which we timid human beings envision as we earnestly live in a universe where myriads of incidents ceaselessly occur. As we stand before Uchino’s works, we begin to realize how unreliable dreams in fact are, as well as how precious they are; hence, her works touch a special chord in our hearts.
